Directions:
Brown ground beef on all sides, breaking up into smaller pieces as you go. Drain grease and set aside. If using fresh onions and garlic, saute in large pot with a little oil until lightly browned. Pour tomato puree into large pot, add spices and bring to a slow boil. Add ground beef and simmer over medium low heat for at least an 1 hour mixing occasionally. The longer, the better. Taste after simmering for an hour and adjust seasonings as needed. For a thinner sauce, add a little water. For a heartier sauce, replace one can of puree with crushed or peeled tomatoes and/or add your favorite veggies (pureed if you want to hide them). To make thicker, add a can of tomato paste. You can also add a little sugar if you are used to a sweeter sauce. If you don't want to use ground beef, ground turkey or pork work just as well. Freeze leftovers for another time in individual serving containers or refrigerate for use within 1 week.
