Heat 2 tablespoons of butter in small pan and saute the onions until translucent. Remove from heat and set aside.

Form a meat patty with ground beef and grill to personal preference.

Melt one tablespoon of butter in a griddle and place 1 bread slice in it. Layer with american cheese, onions, patty, and swiss cheese. Top with buttered remaining slice, buttered side out.

When bottom has browned, flip sandwich over to the other side until cheese has melted.
