Cook pasta, drain and set aside.

In a large skillet on medium heat, heat olive oil and add chopped onion, Italian seasoning and red pepper flakes. Cook until onions have softened, then add garlic, fresh thyme and dash of salt and pepper to taste. Remove from heat and set aside.

Cook meat in a large pan, making sure that meat has browned evenly. Once the meat is done cooking, add it to the pan with seasoned onions. Pour in tomato sauce, add basil and stir. Add a teaspoon of sugar, while bringing the sauce to a simmer by reducing the heat. Let cook uncovered for 15 minutes.

Once sauce has simmered, adjust sauce to personal preference adding salt or more pepper. Pour over penne pasta and sprinkle with parsley.
