Hey out there,

It's been four months since I decided to change my life for good.

Three and one half months ago, I was a chain smoking, overweight advertising exec with a bad attitude.  One round of Chantix (the new "IT" drug for people who want to stop smoking), an inexpensive gym membership, and some perspective changed EVERYTHING for me.

Now, I'm not telling you ANYONE can quit smoking on chantix.  I'd quit for several long periods before, and  I  will say that I'd tried EVERYTHING, and had come to the realization that only WILL POWER would work for me, until this.  I literally stopped smoking in 3 days from when I started using it.  So if you smoke, kill the habit...today!!

Perspective can come in many forms, and most people gain it with age and wisdom.  For me, it came and slapped me across the chops, the way that Mo used to give it to Curly.  My son just strolled into the kitchen one morning as said, "Dad, I'm really glad you don't smoke, people who smoke die".  I just decided right there that I COULDN'T DIE from cigarettes (though I still might...).

But this isn't a feel-good blog.  The one thing that HASN'T changed is the bad attitude, and I feel like this might be a nice spot to let that part all hang out.  See the thing is, as much as working out has changed my life, the honest truth is that I hate it.  When I was in my 20's and 30's, I could burn off 3000 calories a day with my old metabolism.  I really didn't have to exercise, and with the exception of the sports that I loved, I really didn't do any exercise.  All of that (along with my metabolism) came to a screamin' halt the minute I turned 40.   By the time I was 43, I had topped out at 210 lbs (I'm 5'10"), about 25-30 lbs overweight.

So here I am.  If you have not figured it out, I work out at Gold's Gym.  I love this place and the people that come to work out here.  You know some of them guys that fart while doing sit-ups, the freakishly skinny aerobics instructor that weighs 85 lbs.   I figure while I'm working out, I'll take some notes and tell you guys about what I see and hear at Gold's Gym, while I'm complaining about my workout...

until next time....
