A healthful diet plan requires the consumption of a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables.  Improper handling and storage can cause your produce to spoil much more quickly.  Although some loss is inevitable, you can reduce the amount you lose by using proper storage practices.
  • When purchasing fresh produce, place in an area of your basket that will protect it from other food items that could crush and damage it.
  • Check the dates carefully whenever possible.
  • The plastic bags provided at the store or market should not be used for storage once you get your produce home.
  • When transporting your produce, place inside the car and not in the trunk.
  • If you have to run several errands, make your produce purchase the last errand to avoid extreme temperature changes.
  • Store in containers made specifically for fresh fruit, vegetables and herbs which will help provide proper moisture control.
These are just a few suggestions to consider when purchasing and storing fresh produce.  Providing fresh produce for our families requires an investment in time and money.  Proper handling and storage practices helps to protect that investment.
