Texas Half Marathon Countdown - 159 Days

Today is the first day of our Half Marathon training. We selected the Texas Half Marathon because it is January 1, which is just a good time for us and gives us plenty of time to train for it, and because it looks like a fun, small marathon. (We're a little intimidated by crowds.) Plus it should be a bit warmer than we can get around here on New Years Day. The final reason? They have a big, honking race medal and give each runner a rubber duck with their ranking on it. It just sounds like fun.
Today was our first training day. We added the loop on the Germantown trail to give us a nice 2.2 mile run. Then we also did a pacing run for an additional quarter mile. I was pretty fatigued by the end of the 2.2 miles so preparing for the 13.1 miles we need to run is definitely a challenge and one that I'm excited to meet.
Our plan next weekend for our long run is to double the basic path length to 9 miles (by repeating it) and within that do at least a 3 mile run. The rest we'll walk. Our intention is to keep filling in the space of the 9 miles with more and more running until we can up the distance to 10 miles. We'll be taking two yoga breaks in-between to keep our limbs and backs supple and happy. Add to that our Tuesday/Thursday run days, plus the running class on Mondays, plus noon-time yoga, we should be pretty busy. Even so, I should really try to be better about getting in the squats and lunges. My legs will need to be strong to take me to 13.1 victory!
We don't have our formal plan done yet. I'll post it here once we do.
Here's the countdown.
