Paying in Dough

Deep-dish pizzas are a staple of the pizza-pie world. Unlike it's New York -styled cousin, the Chicago deep dish is more akin to an actual pie with its intricately laced layers of sauce, cheese and toppings on top of an unctuously crispy crust. you'll most likely find a fork and knife to be much more servicable than your hands when digging into one of these lasagna-like pies. Before you start that digging process, you may want to take a deeper look into the world of the deep dish pie, and see what's hiding behind those toppings.

If you go to Uno Chicago Grill's official website, or the FitClick database, you'll learn some not-so-well-known facts about the nutritional value (or lack there of) of their deep dish pies. What is more unsettling, is the gross misnomer placed on a variety of these pizzas, labeling them as "individual" menu items.

Tot. Fat Tot. Cal Tot. Sat. Fat.

Cheese & Tomato 120g 1740 36g
Numero Uno 132g 1920 36g
Spinocolli 135g 1860 33g
Chicken Fajita 105g 1560 30g
Chicago Classic 165g 2310 54g
Farmer's Market 105g 1620 27g
Prima Pepperoni 126g 1830 36g
Cheeseburger 132g 1920 39g

Keep in mind that these numbers are representative of the totals of each "individual" pizza. How can any item clocking in at 100+ grams of fat and 1500+ calories constitute as a single meal for any sane person? Take for instance, the grossest offender on this list: the Chicago Classic. If (and it's really not that big of an if) there were any brave soul who dared to conquer this pie, they would consume 115% of their calories, 214% of their fat, and 270% of their saturated fat of their suggested daily totals in a single sitting. Men's Health has even gone on record stating that eating a single Chicago Classic is the equivalent of eating 18 slices of Domino's Crunchy Thin Crust cheese pizza. If you want to feel even more nauseous, just imagine downing roughly 45 slices of thickly cut bacon.

So before you decide to sit down and dig into a seemingly irresistible deep dish, remember that you'll be paying for it with more than just you're wallet. And ask yourself, is that dough really worth all the trouble?
