Starting Out

I've only just recently come across this site and it's much better than some of the others I've seen. Takes a fair bit of time to get it worked out though.
I'm pretty heavy and have been all my life, but now its to a degree that I"m older and really feeling it. I don't want to become so overweight that I'm a lump on a couch, wheezing whenever I stand. But sadly its getting to that state!
Ok.. so.. diet and exercise.. thats what I need to concentrate on. My joints are feeling the pain of too much weight so, I think after my research, water aerobics is a good start..
Actually anything is a good start.. maybe short walks around the block.. and water aerobics too.. yeah.. I'll start with those. I should set a day to weigh myself.
The issue I have at the moment is balancing the meal. Whats more important - hitting that calories mark or balancing it across the board? What if there's more fat? or more carbs? Which is the better one to meet?
I have a year to do something about my weight. Not even just reach my target goal but to set a more appropriate schedule that allows for change... planned meals.. more exercise. I've given myself a year to see change, small changes that hopefully make a big impact.
Good luck to me.
