The camera is the usual accessory for the modern people. They are integrated into the smartphones, iPads, and personal computers. Moreover, they are installed in the advanced technologies such as Google Glasses. The presented paper aims to trace the history of this invention, its impact on the industry and the improvements made so far.

The history of the camera roots back to the Ancient Greece. The residents of this country employed an optical device that was referred to as the camera to project the images on the screen. In Latin, camera obscura means dark chamber. However, until the 18th century there was no equal prototype of the modern camera. The camera created by the Kodak Company pioneered the use of the photographic film. However, it remained the box with the shutter and fixed focus lenses.

The history of the improvements regarding the camera is rather long and involves a lot of centuries and names of the people somehow related to it. Before the invention made by Mr. Wolcott, the users employed the primitive cameras that took the ordinary pictures. In 1841, Mr. Wolcott invented the first camera, which took the candid photos and then used the daguerreotype process to present them on the paper. Naturally, this invention integrated all the discoveries made before. This camera consisted of the box that used the light to reflect the images.

However, regardless of the advancements made in the technology in the last years, the camera was still non-disposable until the 1990s. In 1981, Sony demonstrated the new invention called Sony Mavica. It was the first digital still camera in the world. As Davlin puts it, "digital photography and television images are related to the same technology, so this camera recorded images into a mini disk and then put them into a video reader. Images could be displayed on a television monitor or color printer". In 1990, Kodak introduced cheap handy cameras that were designed for a single use. The first digital camera was created in 1969 and in 2009, its creators, William Boyle and George Smith were awarded the Nobel Prize for their contributions to the history of the invention.

The introduction of the camera has revolutionized the photography-related industries. Additionally, it affected the development of the cinematography. George Eastman had produced the first paper film in 1885 and then he turned to use the celluloid in 1889. Even regardless of the high price, the plate camera offered high-quality prints that were extremely popular in the 20th century. In 1913, Oskar Barnack experimented with the use of 35 mm cine film with the purpose of making the camera enlargements. Today, the photos are compressed in the JPEG format and stored on the flash cards. The cameras became truly popular in the 2000s when they were eventually digitalized and when the price was adjusted due to the decrease in the production costs. Modern devices produce the photos consisting of the millions of pixels, which make the photos incredibly detailed. The invention is consistently improved as the manufacturers add the touchscreens and electronic view screens.

My life would be different without the camera. It enables me to take photos of the most precious moments in my life. More than that, it gives me the opportunity to walk through the memories and share them with others. They contain my visual memories from the journeys, birthdays and daily routine. I also frequently use it to keep certain data in my phone. The photos also help in the restoration of the things in the right order which is frequently used by the criminologists and police to fix the crime scenes. Without a camera I would have to write the information down and to draw the portrays of others to catch their appearances.

I have also chosen this invention due to the little hobby I have. Usually, when I travel, I meet a lot of people from other countries and continents and listen to their stories. I truly enjoy the options the users have today regarding the choice of the cameras and its influence on the quality and conceptuality of the photograph. I take the photo of them and tell their story to my subscribers on Instagram. Thus, the camera supports my hobby and lets me inform others about the citizens of the Earth.

In conclusion, the modern digitalized cameras trace back to the ancient times. Nevertheless, the invention has evolved over the course of time and nowadays they are installed in the majority of the produced devices. In the future, the cameras will become more individualized to serve the specific needs of the users.
