Gastritis is a disorder that affects an individual's stomach lining, causing it to inflame or swell. It occurs either as acute gastritis, which manifests itself suddenly and lasts for short durations, or as chronic gastritis, which manifests itself over time and can be severe if not treated at early stages. Gastritis can be classified into two types, namely erosive gastritis, which causes erosions of the stomach lining that eventually lead to ailments such as ulcers, and non-erosive gastritis, which causes the stomach lining to inflame.

Both erosive and non-erosive gastritis have distinctive causes. For example, particular illnesses and injuries can cause acute anxiety gastritis. Certain conditions may impact the circulatory system, leading to corrosive levels in the stomach. Further, alcohol and drugs consumption, viral and bacterial infections, stomach surgery, aspirin and pain relievers consumption, acidic substances ingestion, and stomach radioactive therapy among other factors may lead to the destruction of the stomach lining. Moreover, Helicobacter pylori is a bacteria that can cause the infection of the stomach lining. The infection is severe and can lead to ulcers and stomach cancer if not treated early. In addition, gastritis can develop due to the autoimmune disease, which occurs when the immune system attacks its own health tissue in the stomach. Also, food allergies can lead to eosinophilic esophagitis, which is a gastrointestinal issue.

The most widespread gastritis symptoms include nauseaor unending stomach upsets that often lead to vomiting, bloating of the stomach, stomach pain, food indigestion, scorching or biting feeling in the abdomen when eating or at night, loss of food appetite, blood vomiting, and black and delayed stools.

When diagnosing gastritis, doctors survey a patients and his or her family medical history, conduct a thorough physical evaluation, and propose appropriate tests. Upper endoscopy allows to test an individuals stomach lining using an endoscope, a thin tube containing a camera. Doctors check for irritation and examine extracted specimens of tissue from the stomach in a laboratory. In addition, doctors can conduct different blood tests. For example, medical professionals may check a patients red platelet count and screening for traces of Helicobacter pylori and other malignant diseases. In addition, doctors can examine an individuals stool by means of the fecal occult blood test. The presence of blood in a persons stool is an indication of gastritis.

Depending on the severity of the condition, health practitioners can prescribe different medication to treat gastritis. For example, acid neutralizers, such as H-2 blockers and proton pump inhibitors, are a widespread prescription. Further, doctors may prescribe a dose of different antibiotics and a drug to block acid in case of gastritis caused by Helicobacter pylori infection. In case of gastritis caused by pernicious anemia, doctors may prescribe B12 vitamin injections. Doctors may also advise patients to avoid eating irritating foods, such as dairy products that contain lactose or foods that contain gluten.

The following foods can reduce the symptoms of gastritis: high-fiber nourishments , low-fat nourishments, low-acid foods, easily soluble foods , and probiotics.

On the other hand, foods rich in fat may cause inflammation in the stomach lining. The following foods may aggravate the symptoms of gastritis: coffee, alcohol, acidic fruits , carbonated beverages, spicy foods, fried foods, and foods rich in fat.

The type, cause, and seriousness of gastritis influence the time it takes for a patient to recover from the condition once treatment has begun. Frequently, patients feel relief shortly after starting treatment. Patients need to consult medical specialists before changing their eating routine or before halting or beginning the consumption of new drugs, including over-the-counter ones.
