Back pain and exercise
I am 57 with back pain in my lower back... sacroilliac, a few bulging discs, degenerative disc disease. It has been approximately two years since I have attempted any work out at all. I am finding I can do lower impact cardio, and very light weight strength training, having to improvise some of the suggested routines on the Beginners Utimate workout for women. I have trouble sitting, or even laying down too long..need to stretch quite a bit after each. Just wondered if anyone else out there is dealing with the same or similar situation? All in all, I have chronic pain everyday anyway but am certain this plan has helped my mental outlook and stress level.

Sounds like you are doing what is right about low impact cardio and stretching. Welcome!

The best exercises you can do for yourself is pilates, and yoga. That will help build your core and improve your range of motion. Low impact and weights are going to make you take muscle relaxtive or a pain killer. Go slow but try those two to start and then introduce low impact and weights. You can get your lifestyle back.

Unfortunately, I have to take a Tramadol everyday for my pain,it is chronic. The funny thing is my pain Dr. wants me to walk, my road is gravel and has lots of inclines/declines..even walking on the flat treadmill with low incline hurts it worse. I am finding the stationary bike & elliptical are not making it worse, I actually feel someone better. As for the core, I faithfully do my PT everyday which includes stretching, core ab work, and I do some yoga poses/stretches as well. My S.I. joint rt side is the biggest problem, (sacro pain) and I find I do not have the flexibility in the right hip as well as left. I went from training clients in my home two years ago to nothing, so I know the weight lifting is alot about form, which I am very aware of, and using low low weights. Thanks for your input, I appreciate it

Pain is so difficult!
I know a lot about pain, but I am growing accustomed to it these days. I hope you can get through the difficult days with some relief! Glad you are finding help here!

Thank you, and I'm sorry to hear that you too have pain...mine is chronic like I said, always there, so I just have to keep a good mental outlook and I think the workouts are relieving my stress level and as long as the pain doesn't get any worse I'm happy

I hear you Nonna 12
I am also 57 and I have lived to chronic back pain for the last 10-13years.I had to quit job as an RN/Diabetic Educator 7 years ago Its a bitch. I finally found a medication that has taken my pain from a 9 to a 4. Even when I hurt like hell I kept moving. Along with the pain is the depression-there where a couple of times I thought I would be better off dead but I prayed alot and I remember that my suffering is for the glory of my Lord. I quit complaining because I always felt that my family/friends would think oh no here she goes again. Take it one day at a time or when the pain in unbearable one minute at a time. My attitude is * at least I can walk and use my arms and legs.*

Good Attitude bjoann
I'm glad you have the right attitude, whenever I start having a "pity party" the Lord always shows me someone much worse off than I am, which puts it all back into perspective for me.. just wondering what medication helps your pain, I have to use Tramadol everyday, and when it gets really bad I have oxicodone...which I really hate (mental fog) I ended up allergic to Vicodin, and they really helped me more than anything else. I'm finding that by making myself exercise everyday, it is helping me be more flexable and able seems to bring down the pain levels too! It's just keeping it up when I really don't want to some days...I'm sure you can relate to that! Hang in there, you are not alone
