Getting back on track

Wow I have fallen so of track. I joined the local gym and tried the treadmill I walked for about 15 mins. at 2 miles an hour then my knees started aching so I stopped. Went back the next day and walked for 20 minutes at 1.8 miles an hour but the next day I could barely walk my knees hurt so bad. then tried aqua aroebics thinking it would be easier on my knees but I barely last 10 mins. and my heart rate as so fast the instructor said I should consult my doctor before I tried again. I am so disappointed I really wanted this to work. Anyone have any suggestions on what I might be able to do at the gym. I know I have to start slow and work up but if a simple walk makes my knees hurt so bad I can't walk what more can I do. Someone please help. I can't continue to be this fat anymore it affects everything I do.
